Solar terminology explained

The terms that turn up in Dutch solar quotes and energy bills, each defined in a single line and then explained. Start with whichever term your quote leaves unexplained.

• kWhA kWh, or kilowatt-hour, is the billing unit on your energy meter: one kilowatt of power drawn for one hour.
• kWpkWp, or kilowatt-peak, is a solar panel’s rated output under fixed laboratory test conditions — not the output your roof will deliver.
• Net meteringNet metering — salderen in Dutch — offsets the electricity you export against the electricity you import at the same rate, and it ends on 1 January 2027.
• Feed-in paymentThe feed-in payment is the amount per kilowatt-hour your energy supplier pays for electricity you export to the grid.
• Feed-in costsFeed-in costs are charges an energy supplier applies for processing the electricity you export to the grid.
